I am a PhD student in the Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and a Minor in Sociocultural Linguistics from the University of California, Santa Barbara. While there, I was a McNair Scholar researching the embodied interactional practices of a nonspeaking autistic Latino teenager and his family members in order to provide fundamental insights into our understanding of human sociality as well as its complexities.
My research examines how nonspeaking autistic bilingual Latinx children and youth and their families creatively manage the interactional, linguistic, cultural, and technological limitations and affordances of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) technologies. Utilizing ethnographic methods, I explore how users and their family members discursively represent AAC as imposing restraints or facilitating interactional practices, as well as how emotional stances about AAC devices (e.g., frustration, appreciation) are established and negotiated between family members through discourses about these practices. I am especially interested in utilizing detailed interactional analysis to investigate the international practices of these families as they work together with AAC devices in order to understand how these device-mediated interactions unfold.
